game commentary:
Well, this year's polite final was an epic battle between the 2 squash giants NP and SP. However, we managed to beat SP 3-2 and 4-1 for the Mens' and Ladies' team respectively. Below are the lowdown on what happened at the squash courts in SP.
MEN'S TEAM
Starting off our campaign was our 2nd seed,SAMUEL ENG. He was up against SP's 2nd seed and got off to a flying start by clinching the first point, followed by winning the first set for NP. All NP supporters erupted in cheers. However, not to outdone, SP came from behind and won the 2nd set. After a short interval, Samuel went in with new determination to again dominate the game and win the 3rd set for NP. Again the NP crowd roared their approval. In the 4th set however, when everyone thought that victory was at hand, SP came back to clinch it. For the last set, the game was very tight and supporters from both NP and SP were screaming their lungs out for their players. And with a decisive and convincing play, Samuel clinched the first game for NP! NP supporters went wild for our 1st victory.
Up next was our President '08/09 DARYL. He went up against another formidable SP opponent. Daryl played very well and without giving any chance, he took every ball and gave it his all . He made the opponent run around the court chasing every single shot. But his SP opponent could not run well enough as Daryl won all 3 sets easily to hand NP another victory. Now, NP was 2-0 up.
Representing us in our 3rd game was BENJAMIN. Benjamin went into the game with confidence playing against a tough opponent. Both players were evenly matched, each able to return the other's drive, boast and drop. Their scores were neck to neck and both of them were trying to find the other's weakness. However, Benjamin was unable to keep up with the fast pace of the opponent, thus losing the 1st set by a small margin . Back in the court for the 2nd set , Benjamin was determined to turn things around. He started belting out all of his specialty shots like his drop shots. SP was unable to adjust at first but did in the end and though Benjamin tried his very best, he lost the 2nd set. In the 3rd set, it was visible that both players were tiring fast and each was trying to end the rally as quickly as possible. In the end, though Benjamin gave a SP a run for its money, SP still managed to claim their first victory of the day. Thus , SP went up 1-2.
Having lost the 3rd set, pressure was on the shoulders of the 4th player. In the 4th game, representing NP was our Captain '08/09 KELVIN. He was up against Gary from SP. Kelvin started off very well and very soon gained control of the game and soon won the 1st set. NP supporters went screaming again. However, Gary came back into the 2nd set determined and soon stamped his authority over Kelvin, soon winning the 2nd set. Coming back for the 3rd set, both players went for everything with both of them hitting long rallies and aiming at the 2 sides. Kelvin put up a brave fight but alas, fell to Gary. In the last deciding 4th set, both players were obviously tired but still gave it their all. In the end, Gary had the extra edge to win the game. SP erupted into cheers for their 2nd victory of the day.
With both NP and SP tied at 2 games apiece, both team's results rested on the shoulders of their 5th player.
Representing SP was their 1st seed Yi Hao and representing NP was ANDY . When the game started, both started whacking ball after ball around the courts, making each other run and dive for the ball. The supporters of both school had all gathered for this final showndown and were screaming their hearts and lungs out for the players. In a decisive win, Andy gave NP the first set and NP supporters roared their approval. In the 2nd set, SP's Yi Hao started playing a tactical game and started making steep drops that required Andy to dive and run all around the courts. Unfortunately, Andy lost that set. Coming back from the short interval, Andy was determined to win the 3rd set. Andy also started his counter game against Yi Hao's drops and soon also had Yi Hao running and diving around the courts with his flawless drives, boasts as well as low drops. That seemed to do the job and Andy clinched the 3rd set to put NP 2-1 up in the final 4th game. With the win, the atmosphere in the courts was very tense, both NP and SP supporters were now competing in cheering, the energy was simply electrifying. With the start of the 4th game, the tension had reached the pinnacle. Every one point won was answered with waves of cheers from their own respective supporter camps. At one time, SP's Yi Hao led 1-6 with Andy with trailing behind. HOWEVER, never the kind to give up, Andy went for every single ball and slowly but surely, started to make his move up the scoreboard and soon was level at 6-6 with Yi Hao. The NP supporters was now cheering at the top of their voices supporting their warrior in court. At 6-6, the scoring was too close for comfort. When one scored, the other would win back the service and keep their hopes going. This went on to 8-8 with Yi Hao serving, and when he served and the rally started, all watched with hushed breaths till the NP supporters exploded with cheers and encourgement for Andy when Yi Hao failed to get his brillant boast from the back . From there , Andy again scored another to bring NP 1 point closer to overall victory . But, it was not to be over yet as Yi Hao won that point back. However, Andy answered back confidently by winning that point back by not giving up on any balls . At the last point 9-8 , Andy served and the rally started. With hushed breaths and clenched fists, NP supporters watched as Yi Hao missed the magnificent last boast from the back from Andy and erupted in triumph cries and punched the air . Andy was soon surrounded by NP supporters hugging him and lifting him up into the air, with the final game score of 3-2 against SP.
With that epic battle , the Men's team claimed back the champion trophy for the second year.
LADIES' TEAM
Playing first was DELPHINE, our 1st seed in the women's squad. Matched against one of SP's weakest players, Delphine totally crushed her opponent in three straight sets easily, much to the SP team's dismay.with that impressive win , the NP ladies team were also up to a flying start whereas for the SP team , they knew they were up against formidable opponents . Admittedly, many of us felt that it was a waste of our best player. SP had strategized their player positions quite well. Nonetheless , NP was up 1-0 .
Next up was TRUDY. Again, she was up against a weaker player, which gave us a reasonably easy win, with Trudy dominating throughout the game by hitting the ball to the backcourt and away from the SP player. In no time , Trudy finished up her opponent in 3 straight sets and we were now up 2-0 against SP. This left the top three SP seeds against Eunice, Rachelle and Genny.
The third match was tense as it was between two evenly matched players and it was the deciding factor as to whether EUNICE could help NP win the ladies' matches with 3 consecutive victories. Eunice got off to a bad start, with her opponent winning the 1st match by a few points. During the short break, the team advised her to hit to the backhand backcourt and not to drop as her drops were all going down that day. However, Eunice again lost the 2nd set by a few points. Despite this, things turned around for NP during the 3rd set. Eunice went back into the court with new found determined to give her opponent a good game and did it !!! In the end winning the 3rd set by a big margin, even after she was whacked by her opponent's racket on her left wrist. Encouraged by her team's cheers and support, she went into the court set on winning the 4th set. This meant that NP and SP were tied at 2-2. If Eunice could win the final match, NP would win 1st place. Both tired, the players went back into the court for the 5th match. The score was at first to Eunice's advantage, but midway, she lost her service and started missing her opponent's serves and cross courts. The atmosphere was very tense as the scores went all the way up to 8-8. A deuce was decided, but Eunice lost her service. SP then went on to win another point, but soon lost the service again. In the end, Eunice lost the service and SP finally won the last winning point. SP had finally won a match, and now the standings were 2-1.
NP's Women's Team Captain RACHELLE played next. The first set was worrying as both players seemed quite evenly matched. Moreover, Rachelle was playing the same girl she played during the POLITE games 2007, the one who injured her knee cap. We all hoped the same wouldn't happen again. However, while Rachelle jogged to the ball as she won a service, her right foot slipped on the slippery floor and bent at an awkward angle. The girls all gasped and there was a flurry of anxiety. The NP team was worried sick as Coach Francis went in to check that she was alright. Luckily, it was just a big shock, and Rachelle was able to resume playing after a few moments. She went on to win the first set by two points with her slightly wobbly ankle. After a short interval , Rachelle went in for the 2nd set, Rachelle won again by 9-3 as her opponent starting to get tired. It was a very exciting moment as NP would win be champions if Rachelle won the third set. And alas, Rachelle took the 3rd set very convincingly by a score of 9-1.ALL NP SUPPORTERS ROARED AND SCREAMED LIKE NOTHING !!! THIS MEANT THAT THE LADIES TEAM HAD DEFENDED THEIR TITLE !!! Hugs and Screams were abundant throughout the Ladies Team as they celebrated their win .
With a final 5th match to go, GENNY was the last sent in to play. Although NP had already won the title, it was still a stressful match as SP did not want to lose 4-1 to us and Genny wanted to give her opponent a good game as well. Genny was up against an unfriendly player with an equally strong serve. It was a long and close first match, but Genny kept her composure and proceeded to win it. However, not to be outdone by Genny , the SP opponent went on fought on and surprised everyone by winning the 2nd and 3rd set. Determined not to lose to her unfriendly opponent, Genny fought back strong and hard during the 4th set. During the game, she accidently hit her opponent and apologized, but the SP girl did not react and kept an impassive expression , and on went on the game . With much perseverance , Genny overcame the odds and won the 4th set to make way for a fresh new wave of screams . It was now down to the 5th set. The tension between the 2 sch's supporters was evident as both sides screamed and cheered for their players whenever each won a point or service . Both players put in their all and the scores went all the way to 8-8. With a deuce decided, Genny served, but lost her service, giving SP the advantage for a moment.The SP crowd screamed for their girl BUT , our team screamed encouragement to Genny , drowning SP's supporters voice down . WIth the team firmly supporting her , Genny dug dig and took back the service. The scenario repeated another time before Genny managed to clinch the win with a 10-8 win.AND WITH THAT , NP LADIES TEAM WON IN FASHION !!! The NP team went into a frenzy the second Genny stepped out of the court . The whole team circled together , hugging and screaming as tears of joy as well . and THUS , NP LADIES TEAM THRASHED SP 4-1 !!!
THATS HOW BOTH TEAM WON THE EPIC BATTLE AGAINST SP WITH THE MENS TEAM WINNING 3-2 AND THE LADIES 4-1 . THE TEAM WOULD LIKE TO THANK ALL THOSE PEOPLE THAT HAD CAME DOWN TO SUPPORT US DURING THE 3 DAYS . ALSO , WE WOULD LIKE TO THANK OUR COACH , CAUSE WITHOUT HIM , WE WOULDNT HAVE THE RESULTS TODAY .
